it's beginning to look a lot a bit like christmas

OK, I am SO done with being sick. A three-day hospital stay in August with four different septuagenarian roomates, endless time spent in various doctors' waiting rooms during September and October, and a 12-week course of prednisone that ended mid-November, complete with side-effects (chipmunk cheeks and tree trunk legs, anyone?) and withdrawal symptoms. Enough is enough. I'm feeling much better now, thanks, and it's time to get into the holiday spirit.

The Christmas season in German got off to a chilly start on November 28, the first Advent Sunday. Our Advent 'wreath' looks like this this year. Less is more, eh?

Obligatory poinsettia

A new addition to our collection of Lichterbogen

And one of the old faithfuls that has been lighting up our window every Christmas for at least a decade

Today is December 1st and you know what that means. Advent calendars all around. I got a chocolate-y one this year, as did my better half, and the kids are making do with one of these each. You're never, ever too old to snuggle with a moose!

I also ventured into a spot of cookie baking this morning but have not yet reached my full potential.

Most of Germany has had record breaking freezing temperatures and quite a bit of snow this week. Now it's our city's turn. Snowing like crazy out there, not expected to stop until Friday. Whoo! Or maybe not, depending on how you look at it.

So how's your winter been so far?

Yipeee! You're feeling better!!! You lucky duck -- you must be getting all of our snow -- we haven't had any ('cause you can't count the wimpy flurries we had today.) Your decorations look wonderful and those cookies! YUM YUM!!!

First of all, Christina, I hate it for you that you've had such a rough time of things. ENOUGH ALREADY!

If anyone will get us into the spirit of the season it's you, of course. You certainly put me to shame in that department. Astrid's tradition is to put up the Xmas tree AFTER Sinterklaas day, which is the 5th for us (the 6th for you, as I recall). So next week we'll decorate the tree and apartment.

As for the weather, you and we are probably mirroring each other. It's snowing as we speak...and I love it. As our friends to the north keep saying, there's no such thing as bad weather--only bad clothes!

Carry on, my friend. I pray these days ahead will find you in good health!

Rainy. Isn't that odd? Not so cold either. We want to ski!
Glad you are doing better. I can't take prednisone. The side effects are to bad to list.
Hope your holidays hare happy!

Glad you're feeling better.

We started off the week with -14C and now it's about -4C. Enough snow that I couldn't get out up the little hill on our circular driveway so had to back out the other way - 100+ meters down a snowed-over dirt driveway. Lovely. But we also have two adorable snowmen standing guard by our kitchen door, which really is lovely.

Merry Christmas Christine! So good to hear from you. Phew. I hope that you feel much better. Three weeks ago, I over-confidently handled poison ivy and ended up at the local CVS minute clinic for treatment. Prednisone was recommended and I said, no way. No puffy face for me.
Welcome back!

So great to hear that you are finally feeling better! Was about time! I've done only a bit of decorating, but that's good enough for me right now. We're expecting a bunch of snow this coming weekend. At least it will look a bit moer "Christmassy" ;-)

I'm happy you are feeling better as well! Those cookies look amazing. And your decorations, love em! We don't have anything but need to start looking for stuff we like soon with the kiddo coming!

Our snap started the week before yours and then it left. Tonight is cold again... I'd rather it be a bit warmer and raining...

Thimbleanna - we had more snow today! I can't believe it. And it's nice and fluffy, not icy like last year so people are enjoying it more.

Ginnie - Thank you so much for your kind thoughts. I'm really hoping this year will be the end of all the health stuff. I blame Mercury Retrograde! :-) Can't wait to see your tree and decorations. Yes, we're doing Nikolaus tomorrow, the 6th.

Jessica - Thank you!

Maribeth - What, no snow? Aren't you usually buried in it? Yes, prednisone is horrible, but sometimes it's the only thing that helps. :-(

Jennifer - the snowmen are the best part, aren't they? My two are 14 and 17 now and still love playing in the snow.

Lisa in Inday - Thank you! Good for you for refusing the prednisone - really not needed for that kind of thing. Unfortunately I had no choice but I sure hope I won't need it again. Ugh.

Canadian Swiss - I'm sure you'll get tons of snow soon. Glad you're settling in so well. ;-)

Expat - yes, when you have little ones you start wanting to decorate more and make it fun for them. Just wait until next year!

Well my dear Christina, I'm glad your feeling better. Yes, I know all about Prednisone, the demon drug that sometimes I can't live without. I must admit though, I get a lot of stuff done while on it, I seem to have lots of energy. I've never stayed on it for more than 6 days but high dosages so I don't know about the withdrawal but I'm sure it's horrible. I love your Christmas decorations and Advent candles. Your house is more ready than mine at the moment. There's hope yet though...ciao

Hi Christina, long time no see. I really hope you are feeling better now and can put stuff behind you. You certainly have done the Christmas preps. Thanks for helping me getting into the right jolly mood as well with your pictures. Have a lovely Christmas.

Rositta - Thanks! yeah, being on it for 12 weeks was hell but it DOES give you tons of energy in higher doses.

swenglish - Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the pics.
