hold the mayo

I haven't jumped ship yet. Really.

Ever heard of the Sandwich Generation? That would be me and Mr. M right now, feeling like we're squished between two thick, dark slabs of that stuff the Germans like to call bread. One of those slabs is the trials and tribulations of trying to guide two adolescent boys through the oddities of the German secondary school system without any of us going insane. The other more worrying one is some unexpected in-law drama that surfaced during the past couple of weeks. No, no one is dead or seriously ill, but there are going to be some major changes happening in the coming months, hopefully for the benefit of all concerned. If only some of those concerned could actually get it through their thick skulls that these changes are absolutely necessary.

We're just trying to make the best of it right now.

What's that old saying? "If life gives you lemons, make tuna salad"? No, wait...

come on over and have some pie

It's the second Monday in October and that means only one thing - Canadian Thanksgiving. Turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie, the works.

Our little 5 lb turkey is about to go into the oven and I made the desserts this morning. You should see my kitchen. Organized I am not.

My pumpkin pie, made from scratch with a little Hokkaido pumkin I bought last week, turned out's just say...rustic. Then again, if I stuck an 'artisan' label on it I could probably sell it for 25 bucks.

I made these maple walnut butter tarts on a whim and haven't tasted them yet, but they smell like home. That other home that shares a place in my heart along with this one.

I'm just saying a quiet "thank you" today for all the good things in my life, butter tarts included.

Happy Thanksgiving to all you Canucks out there, near and far.

Hem your blessings with thankfulness so they don't unravel. ~Author Unknown

hurry up and wait

So sorry for the long blogging break. I have so much to say and not enough time in the day to say it!

This translation project I've been working on is taking waaaay longer than I thought it would and my head is kind of exploding in the process. Not having a real deadline is very, very bad for a procrastinator like me, 'cause I'll string it out ad infinitum if given the chance. I'm almost finished, though - just need to polish it up a bit and send it on its way and then I'll go back to being a lady of leisure for a while. Well, except for the cooking and cleaning and managing a family and all that other easy stuff that no one pays you for.

The kids are now on 16 days fall break which means that I get to sleep in while they get their own breakfast. Whoo.

To be continued...
