on this day 17 years ago...

...I moved to Germany. I guess someone forgot to tell me it was for good.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Laugh and cry if you want, it's okay, but really nothing is for "good". There is absolutely no way of knowing what curve balls life will throw you and how you catch them is up to you. You'll be fine...I'd hate to be in your shoes though...hugs :)

You never know what's in store for you. I moved to London 20 years ago this summer, on a one-year contract! One thing led to another, I married an English person, I became a British citizen and I moved to Germany! Little did I know then. So, here I am, 'doubly-expatted'! (Is that a word?) Here's to the unknown future.Cheers! :)

Life is full of the unexpected. The good. Always focus on the good.

Well, I went from the Canadian border (near Winnipeg) to London for a 9-month college stint, which led to a sojourn in southern France, etc. That was 1972.

My advice: do what you are doing, stay curious and hopeful.

Well, 17 years is a long time and you have made it so far. Crack open the champers darlin'..and smile.

Maybe mark the day by doing a little bit of both?

And then having a glass of champagne and a nice dinner.

Just remember-- nothing is permanent, even if it seems that way at the moment. 17 years ago you had no clue that you'd still be here. Who knows where you'll be marking the next 17 years! Fiji? ;-)

I know how you feel. I've been here for almost 23 years, now, and the Canada plans are stagnating at the moment. Not that I don't like it here, but I want to go home.

I'll have a glass in your (and my) honor today. Keep smiling :)

I'm with Wendz, crack open a bottle of finest Sekt and smile until your face hurts.

If it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger!

I totally understand what your saying. I moved here five year and 16 days ago (but who's keep in track?) from a country that I totally loved and felt at home in, and it looks like I'll be staying here.

So, congrats on surviving 17 years. It's up to you to decide if you should laugh or cry.

A little crying and a little laughing is appropriate. It's natural to wish you lived where you love it best but be in a place that fits the way your life is now.

I'd move back home to Mississippi were it possible but it never will be so I visit there when I can and find all the good things I can about where I am now. In the nearly ten years I've been in Germany it's served me pretty well.

My only advice would be to bloom where you're planted, sugar. Just bloom where you're planted.

When I first arrived in Hamburg thinking it was for good (it lasted 9 years) I ran into a book called "Bloom where you are planted"...We left to come to Spain for 3-5 years, it has been 13 1/2 years and there is no way we can think we can retire here. Expect the unexpected, don't forget to smile, though.

how ironic that it's 17 on the 070707....

Was it at 7pm that you wrote also?

Well - it must not be that bad to have the best of both worlds...

:) we are back and hoping to post pics and stories!

Bittersweet. A tear and a smile. I've decided that this is Life's Journey no matter where we are!

As long as you keep your humor, Christina, you can be anywhere for a long time, as you've already noticed. :)

Oh my! My eleven years in Mouseland was in April and I wanted to bang my head on the wall while repeating "one more year, just one more year." But then I remeber all that would not have been had I not moved - husband, two kids. I'm sure there has been some good and some bad of your move but congrats on your endurance!

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at this post. Here's a hug, in any case.

Thanks for making me smile, guys. I guess the laughing wins out after all. :-)
