tastes like chicken

Many thanks go out to heather in europe for pointing me in the direction of this very tasty recipe.

General Tao's Tofu

You read right, that's tofu in there. What? You don't like tofu? You may just change your mind after you try it done this way. I adore tofu in any form, but this was especially good. Even self-professed tofu-hater Mr. M had two helpings.

I rarely follow a recipe word for word and this one is very flexible. I doubled the delicious sauce and added a whole bunch more vegetables - red, yellow and green peppers, carrots, mushrooms and red onions. If I had had any broccoli on hand it would have made its way in there as well. In its original form the recipe is tailored to vegan/vegetarian diets. Since we are a family of omnivores, I used a real egg to coat the tofu and used chicken stock in the sauce because that's what I had in my cupboard.

And don't tell, but if you still can't get your head around the idea of eating tofu, I'm sure this would be equally good with chicken.

I have never eaten tofu nor cooked it. I think you may have inspired me!

Okay, let me start by saying I got into the habit of checking your site on a regular basis. I was sooo busy the last couple of weeks, that I never once ventured online. So, I want to start by saying I'm sorry I missed your birthday, but I was able to go back and catch up. Happy Belated Birthday!
Now, As for the tofu. I tried it years ago and it was a big flop. I believe I've mentioned that I'm unlucky in the kitchen.....but somehow your dishes always seem to look so apetizing. I am going to attempt it once again. This time I will be borrowing your recipe, if you don't mind.

I've never had tofu or even seen it in the shops I think, but the dish looks absolutely delicious. I'd better check with Mrs S if she has spotted any in the shops before I get the other ingredients. Am I saying this just because I am starving at the moment? We'll see.

cathy - Go for it! I bet your kids would like it.

ossy Thanks so much! You should really try the tofu again. It definitely needs a sauce or marinade or it can taste pretty awful. I find you can make just about anything look appetizing if you sprinkle a few green onions over it. ;-)

rubber duckie - Yeah, I guess they don't want you catching anything on fire!

swenglishexpat - Both our local Plus and Edeka supermarkets suddenly started carrying tofu a couple of years ago and you can get it for sure in Asian markets and probably at the health food store as well. The firm variety is best for this kind of recipe.

ms mac - Yes, I can imagine the Swiss turning their noses up at tofu. Maybe it's tucked away at the back of Migros or Coop? :-)

Dixie - The sauce is what makes it here. It would probably taste good on anything.

Anything from your kitchen would just HAVE to taste scrumptious, Christina, so you've already sold me on it. Now let's see if I actually try it on my own. :)

I hope you're feeling better!?!

ginnie - I think you'd like it! I didn't use any red pepper but you could really spice it up a lot if you wanted to and add any vegetables you have on hand.

I'm still feeling just a bit wonky, but it's SO much better than last week. :-)

wow, that's impressive looking for the first time making it. (although i'll pretend i didn't read your last sentence, since i always tell the meat eaters in my family it tastes so good because of the tofu. ;-))

heather - Oh yeah, I LOVE the way it tastes with the tofu too - it's the only way I'd make it.

Sorry Mausi,

1. I have to post these rules before I give you the facts.
2. Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
3. People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules.
4. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.
5. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.
