life is a roller coaster

Well thank you all again for the lovely birthday wishes! I think birthdays are something to be celebrated and I was glad to be able to share my day with you.

That said, I have to emphasize that my life is not always sunshine and fancy desserts and pretty pictures. That's right, my blog is an optical illusion. Fancy that! My blog is a PART of me, that's for sure, but it's not ALL of me. Not by a long shot. Those of you who know me well (and there really aren't that many of you) know what I mean.

Lurking off to the side of those pretty pictures you'll find the very same existential angst and nagging self-doubt (and not just because of the undone dishes and the unfolded laundry!) that y'all have over at your place. But of course you're still all invited to come over for cake next year.

So yes, life has its ups and downs. Let's start with the weather. Friday was gorgeous most of the day with a couple of showers in the afternoon. During the night the rain started and I don't think it has let up since. Basements were flooded (not ours, we duct taped the door closed!), tree branches came crashing down and people were actually hit by lighting. Yikes.

And I had my own thunderstorm going on in my head. After dealing with a couple of annoying long-term health problems over the past few weeks and finally starting to feel a bit better, I woke up on Monday morning with a wicked case of vertigo. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo to be exact. If you've ever had this, and I've read about a couple of bloggers who have, you'll know how very unpleasant it can be. I've been doing the recommended exercises and am much better today, but yesterday all I had to do was turn my head to the right or look down, and the Tilt-a-Whirl would start. It was like "Stop the world, I want to get off!" Not much fun for someone who is already prone to dizziness and nausea and never liked amusement parks much anyway. Mr M had yesterday off and my little monkeys have a school holiday today so they're watching out for me just in case I do tip over.

But life goes on and this too shall pass. And if I can type, it means I'm still alive, right?

Sorry to hear about it! The Tilt-a-Whirl is only fun when you're a child and the ride only lasts two minutes. Feel better soon!

I'll definitely have to get myself in gear now and blog about my flowers to cheer you up. (The wedding invitations have finally been ordered, so I have no excuses left. But that's another blog post.)

Oh I had that vertigo problem recently, it's really annoying! Get better soon.

Sorry to hear about that. Really hope you feel better soon!

I know what you mean sometimes about the blog being an optical illusion. But sometimes it's also important to say what's really going on, as well. I really hope you feel better soon!

Aw, Christina... if you were here I'd gather you up in a fluffy 'I feel you' hug. Nobody deserves that. Hope it goes away very soon. Today would be nice.

No rain, no rainbows. You didn't want to be a Stepford Wife, now did you? I've been in a wicked funk lately, so I kind of relate, but I'm sorry to hear you have the vertigo on top of it because that really is unnecessary icing on the cake.

Sorry to hear that you're not back to 100% yet. Hug.

I think that most people's blogs are like your - where not everything is posted. Mine sure is.

Oh Christina, I'm so sorry to hear this! I popped by to see what you were up to and to wish you a happy belated birthday.

Hope your turn on the Tilt-a-Whirl ends quickly and that next you can hop on a ride that makes you want to laugh instead of puke! ;-)

Hang in there, OK?

Belated happy birthday and get-well soon wishes.

I've had a couple of episodes of vertigo lately too. Is yours definitely an inner ear thing or could it be blood-pressure related? Mine is neither. I'm going for an x-ray of my cerebral vertebrae soon to see if that could be the cause.

Oh wow, my sweetie had vertigo a couple of years ago and it lasted close to 3 months. He was actually unable to work (he's in construction) and coudn't drive. The exercises help somewhat. I hope your feeling better soon...ciao

Oh yikes! I can't imagine how uncomfortable and freaky feeling that must be. Hope it's gone soon.

I think most people's blogs are an allusion. I do not like to share the negatives of my life with everyone, but I will do the positives freely.

I hope you get to feeling better soon!

Oh Christina, so sorry to hear about your vertigo troubles. I hope everything is better now and if not yet that it will be soon. Expat life is enough of a fun-park ride without having to deal with that too :(

So, so sorry this isn't over with yet, Christina. UGH. Donica is in Hannover today and tomorrow. I just wish I could have gone with her and "taken care" of you. Please know my best thoughts and wishes are with you!

Your new picture is great ... I had a nasty run with the vertigo thing, discovered it as I was descending the circular stairs of a bell tower in Italy ... It lasted far too long.

angie - Yeah, it's someone else's turn now. Actually, the Tilt-a-Whirl was the only ride I could stomach as a kid. Look forward to seeing your flowers!

kim and victoria - Thanks! It's no fun, is it?

Elemm - Thanks!

rubber duckie - Yes, but if you whine *too* much, people start getting on your case. :-)

lisa - Aww, you're so sweet. A bit better now but still there.

mike b - Believe me, I'm the exact opposite of a Stepford Wife. Just ask the rest of the neighbourhood. :-)

J - Thanks! Yeah, the blog doesn't tell the whole story, but that's OK.

Betsy - Looks like someone bought me a book of 10 tickets but I'm sure the ride's gonna end soon!

Lesley - Thanks and sorry to hear you've been going through this as well. I'm pretty sure it's an ear thing - the symptoms are exactly as they describe them - definitely one-sided and I do have ear problems anyway. If it hasn't resolved by tomorrow it's off the doc with me.

rositta - 3 months eh? That's no fun. No way I'm driving anywhere right now but I hope to feel better really soon.

dixie - Yep, it's a very weird feeling, sort of like someone trying to push you over.

maria - I think you're right, although some people do let it all hang out. I admire that, actually.

Alison - You said it! I really didn't need this right now, but at least it's not life threatening. :-)

Ginnie - Bless your heart! I'm sure I'll be OK very soon and as I said, if I'm not better tomorrow Mr M is going to whisk me off to the ENT doctor to see what's up.

berlinbound - Thanks! It's a frightening feeling, isn't it? I get dizzy quite easily any way but this is very annoying.

ouch! At least you look on the positive side of things. I'm feeling that sort of vertigo/nausea this morning, not fun. Most of the time I think mine is from my morning swim workout!

If I were there, I'd love to visit to cheer you up...

expat- Thanks! Yeah, I could see you having that if you got water in your ears or something. Not a good feeling.

Sounds like no fun at all... maybe if you get really drunk if the room will STOP spinning? Might be worth a try.. lol.

Seriously, I hope you're feeling better soon.

Sorry you have been under the weather. I hate being sick and know how frustrating it is to not be able to do what you want.

I thank you for "admitting" that you blog is only one side. I sometimes find myself deciding not to write because I choose not to "share" much of the negative and therefore I limit what I can write about. It's nice to know that nowhere - not even Germany - is always perfect :) Hope you feel better soon!

At June 01, 2007 9:32 PM, Blogger christina said...

Eurotrippen - Yep, I seriously thought about having a good stiff drink. The room is almost standing still today. And I'm a Gemini, BTW, not a Taurus.
:-)

ann - Thank you! I'm on the mend already.

hexe - I think I kind of use my blog to remind *myself* of the good stuff in my life. And no, life is not perfect anywhere, even in Germany. Or *especially* in Germany. :-) When you get right down to the nitty gritty, living in Europe has the same ups and downs as living anywhere else in the world, believe me.

yikes, i hope that this gets settled, with a real cure. did you say
"y'all"? !
for what it's worth, i like to hear about both sides of you

At June 02, 2007 9:51 PM, Blogger christina said...

american in france - Thanks! I'm almost all better now.

jessica - Well, "y'all" is something I'd never say in real life (I've heard a lot of Canadians say "yas" or "yous" to mean the same thing. but I sure like writing it. :-)
The real cure has happened and I'll be reporting from the dark side soon.

Happy to hear that you can still type, but the rest of the "Unwohlheit" is no fun. I hope you feel better soon . I'm not exactly at my best right now either - although all the partying could fool most.

Take care.

Ooo sorry to hear about the vertigo. I know from personal experience how ugly that is. But it does usually go away and the exercises do help (when they don't make you sick)
