everything but the kitchen sink

Kim at Stepping Stones tagged me for a "what's in your handbag meme" and I'm happy to oblige.

I seem to be one of the few women on earth who couldn't care less about designer handbags. I do have a lot of bags, but none of them were very expensive. I go more for function and comfort. They have to be able to hold all my stuff and not slip off my shoulder every 5 minutes. Mr M is the only other person who's allowed to dig around in my bag, but he doesn't do it very often.

I've been using this green bag since last November and it has held up well so far.

And of course you want to know what I carry around with me on a day to day basis.

cell phone
address book
appointment calendar
4 pens
make-up bag
hair brush
breath mints
bus schedule
nasal spray
travel sickness pills
Lufthansa air sickness bag
plastic Edeka shopping bag
red fabric shopping bag with Mr M's company logo on it
the kitchen sink

I'm ready for anything!

How is that bag green? I see brown. And why do you carry your passport around with you every day?

(I won`t look in mine, it`s not healthy)

Tinakala - It really is dark green, just looks brown in that light. And foreigners in Germany are required to carry their passports with them at all times - we don't get an identity card so it's the only ID we have.

Tinakala asked my question, so I am question-less now. Nice bag!

I definitely see green!

That's a fun meme, and it makes me glad I just cleaned out my purse! My blogging has been waylaid by life this week (past weekend spent cleaning out my childhood bedroom, and a minor car accident involving me, snow, and the garage) but I think I will do this one when I have time! :)

Although a more appropriate meme for me would have been, "what's still stored in your old closet at your parents' house even though you moved out 1 1/2 years ago?" In my case, it was every scrap of paper I collected since 1989, and some scary, scary clothing. And a box of magic tricks from when I wanted to be a magician.

By the way, I thought your Chinese dishes looked GREAT! One blogger's crap is another's treasure. :)

Sorry, that comment was like a novel... the caffeine intake was high this morning!

I can't wait till I have a bag that organised - right now mine still contains a nappy and baby wipes and some snacks all just in case.

And you know what, I had no idea I had to carry my passport with me at all times. That's hilarious! I've been living dangerously for seven years!

maribeth - Thanks! It holds a LOT of stuff.

angie - Whoah, a car accident? Hope you and the garage are OK. I'm pretty sure my parents still have boxes of my old stuff even though I moved out about 20 years ago and they've moved 5 times since then. And I'm wondering if there's any kid who DIDN'T want to be a magician. I know I did.

charlotte - Oh, I remember the days of carrying baby wipes and snacks around. I must have cleaned my purse out last week because usually there's a lot more junk in there and I can't find a thing. I didn't know about the passport thing either until a couple of years ago and had never, ever been checked but now I carry it just in case.

Question Christina,

I was told by the police in Dresden that a photocopy of my passport was fine. I take the Passport when necessary, as to the Post Office to pick up a package or the bank when I need verification. Otherwise....?????

Lee - Yes, I think someone (maybe it was you?) on the germanway list also mentioned that a police officera photocopy was all right depending on the situation. I have never been checked in all the time I've lived her but you never know.

LOL. For me, the Lufthansa air sickness bag was the winning item :)

You gotta have a shopping bag in your purse at all times, don't you? I find that when I don't have one, that's when I'm gonna need it.

So far I believe I'm the only one who didn't have keys in her purse. Inside I keep my keys on the key hook thingy and if I'm out, they're always in my pocket - never in my purse. I have no idea when I started doing that. I didn't used to.

I don't walk around with my passport but I do keep it in my purse because if I have my purse I'm probably driving and then you definitely need it with you.

I'm loving the airsickness bag.

After looking at those pictures my only though is "I could murder a tic tac right about now".

There's so much goodness on that list that I didn't even notice the airsickness bag the first time! Classic.

I am fine, the garage is fine, the car, not so much... but that is what insurance is for! (But I have to pay my deductible -- $500, ouch.)

Geez you have a lot of stuff in your bag!

I carry my car papers, ID card, cheque book and purse, cellphone, mint gum, tissues, an emergency tampon and a pen. That's it! My bags are very small - I hate lugging big bags around with me.

But I do have things in my cars cubby hole.

Wow - you are very organized! I forget the major things like my cell phone or cash (it's really embarrassing how often this happens) but I can always find dog treats and my fiance's eye drops. It's very strange.

It's been fun to see what's in everyone's purse. I see Kim really started something! :)

And I can definitely vouch for that purse. Nice one, Christina. :)

Never would I have thought to blog my bag, but now that I've seen this I will have to photograph my new bag which I think is the absolute bomb. I'll give you all the credit. And I had no idea you should carry a passport around here....all I have is my German driver's license with me (which I'm oh so proud to have). Should blog that too. And I sadly also always have nasal spray too so that's the winner for me. susan

I'm still wondering why the passport, is it a german need? I never carried mine unless I knew I was leaving the country...

I like your bag, looks comfy and practical!

I guess you don't actually need the kitchen sink! A great bag, you're fully prepared...let's go shopping!

You never go far wrong with an emergency Lufthansa air sickness bag! :)

I have never carried around my passport in Germany unless I was going to the airport! :)

Wait! ... Am I the only one here who thinks this looks a bit too organized? Did you have a prop person come in and set up that shot? Where are the used but not yet discarded tissues, chewing gum wrappers and embarrassing personal hygiene products?

I'm sure all that stuff is useful, but the sheer quantity is scary ... nonetheless, don't ask me to empy my wallet or pockets for fear I might have a similar stash.
