ok, so raise your hand if you weren't at IKEA last Saturday

I know for a fact that Alison was there. And so was Mike.

We were there, too. For about the fourth time since a brand new store opened up very close to where we live last October. This time we went back to buy some kitchen lights that weren't in stock last month. Did I mention that our new kitchen is being installed on February 9th? Did I mention how excited I am? Maybe I should also mention that instead of sitting here blogging I really should be in my old kitchen right now cleaning out the cabinets. Don't tell.

Anyway, we went back to get the lights and guess what? They were still out of stock. Hmmmph. This forced us to splurge on two sets of three lights instead of the original one set of five that I had my heart set on, but I think my esthetic sensibilites will get over it. After all, who knows when they'll actually have the other ones in stock and I don't want to end up cooking in the dark.

We swore we were just going to run in and get the lights and be home in time for lunch, but you know how it is. You (or at least we) let your guard down and usually end up with one or two things you don't really need.

Meet our new houseguests. I'm just a sucker for plush, I guess.

mother and child

And in case the monkeys started to feel lonely we had to buy these

I think I feel a puppet show coming on.

But we did not, I repeat did NOT succumb to the cheap hot dogs or those deliciously crispy oatmeal cookies. And that's really an exercise in IKEA self-control.

Yes I know what I should be doing also!

how cute! We avoid IKEA mostly because we know we will move again and our furniture can't handle that. On the other hand, we have to get rid of our sofa soon because our new one should be here in another month...

Oh I've only eaten an ice cream there once... Nothing more. I think growing up from cAlifornia makes one spoiled at the choices of furniture we have for so cheap... (can't find it anywhere else)

No IKEAs near us. Boo hoo.
I used to love their coffee (espresso).

I was there on Saturday as well. Moorfleet near Hamburg. I can only take it for about an hour before I stop responding to stimuli, my eyes glaze over and I start listlessly wandering among the display rooms. I might just forget I'm in public and make myself at home on one of the beds or sofas. If that happens, I just need to be parked at the restaurant. I can be picked up when the shopping is done.

I can think of no greater torture than when Mrs. TBF suggests going to IKEA on a Saturday. The one near us in Pratteln is an ABSOLUTE, CROWDED NIGHTMARE on Saturdays. On the rare occasion that I go to IKEA, I try to pick the least crowded time which is usually around mid-morning on a Monday or a Tuesday.

There you are! I've been getting error messages when I try to access your blog for the last week. I was beginning to panic. Good to see you're still here.

(I'm trying that spinach pie for dinner tonight. I'm lovin' me some spinach. :) Thanks!)

*raising my hand* I was not at Ikea on Saturday. For that matter, I tend to avoid all shopping on Saturday, because I do not like crowds!

That being said, I might have to drive to Ikea to pick me up some of those finger puppets. My six week old son would LOVE to watch those for hours!

I will have no problem avoiding the hotdogs, but I am certain to come home stuffed full of meatballs... and with a few extra items beyond the finger puppets!

We always plan our trips around meal time. I love Swedish meatballs! Our Ikea also has a pommes frites stand out front, hot fries on a cold day, hmmm, think I hear Ikea calling!

Köttbullar, anyone?

We usually get our paper napkins there, not to mention picking up a few more items on the way. And OX will not go out before having had two hotdogs.

I'll have to try the oatmeal cookies, one of these days.

Believe it or not, Christina, Donica and I have never stepped inside an IKEA. We DID see the headquarters of it in Sweden and found out the name stands for
the initials
of the founder plus where he grew up. Cool.

However, there IS an IKEA in Atlanta, so one of these days we will go visit just to say we did it. We need to see what all the fuss is about. :)

As always, this is such a great post! Nicholas would love those finger puppets--for sure!

I wasn't at Ikea on Saturday but I do love a trip there. I usually meet Mr Mac there after work on a Fri arvo when it's quiet. I never manage to say no to the hotdogs though.

IKEA not having what you need in stock??? I can't imagine :) Yay you on getting a new kitchen though! I wish I could reno mine... but as long as we're renting it's not going to happen. Oh and you never go to IKEA and JUST buy what you went for ;)

I wasn't there but I need a good IKEA fix right now ...

Oddly enough, I was at IKEA Saturday, also. The one in San Sebastian del los Reyes. I have a 275€ hole in my wallet to prove it.

Expat - Yes, better to wait until you settle somewhere permanently and then open your wallet at IKEA.

j.doe - the other IKEA was about a million miles away so we rarely went, but with this new one being so close I have a feeling we'll be visiting often.

Nate - There IS so much to see. I kind of zone out after a while too, but it never occured to me to take a nap. Might have to try that next time. :-)

TBF - We were prepared for the worst but it wasn't even that crowded. Lots of little kids, but we didn't get mowed down or anything.

Lisa - Hmm, that's funny, I've been here the whole time. Maybe it was Blogger. Google got me in a headlock last night and made me switch to Blogger Beta and I'm still a bit suspicious although things seem to be running OK.

Hope the pie worked out for you.

Maria - I know, I usually hate shopping on Saturdays too. Downtown can just be nuts. The finger puppets are really cute and they have sea creatures too.

Andrea - Yep, that Swedish food is mighty tempting, isn't it?

Elemm - Last time we were there we actually bought a bag of frozen Köttbullar to take home for dinner.

CanSwiss - The hot dogs will get you every time!

Ginnie - You'll have to check it out some time. It's quite fun and they have so much interesting stuff. Nicholas would love the puppets - maybe you should go while you're here.

ms mac - Friday afternoon seems to be the busiest around here, no idea why. And I may just have eaten a couple of those hot dogs myself the last time we were there a month ago. :-)

Alison - Amazing, isn't it? :-) Luckily we haven't bought any big ticket items there yet. I can imagine your frustration. I'm REALLY looking forward to the new kitchen - been living with the old one for 11 years now.

Berlinbound - I find I get pretty inspired seeing all their design ideas. Or were you talking about the hot dogs? :-)

Sal - Aha! I thought I felt a disturbance in the force. :-) Now of course we're all dying to know what you bought for €275.

I love the cookies and hotdogs too, but even better is the salmon. It is about the best fish you can buy in Prague! One quick Ikea tip that works here and maybe in Germany too - if the product you want is listed on their website, visit that product's page, select your Ikea location and the site will tell you if it is in stock or not.

OK, so it's not just me who hates the hot dogs, but those cookies and salmon are mighty tasty. We realized after escaping without spending a cent that we had failed to pick up a couple packs of serviettes (napkins to us yanks), which was really a shame because they are good value.

hey hey, what's up, I cant link to other bloggers in your comments. Is that on purpose? I lost expatraveller's page...ciao

Julia - We love salmon, we'll have to try it some time. And I never thought to check online if the lights were in stock. Duh. Thanks for the tip.

Mike - Well, you're obviously a hot dog connoiseur!

rositta - Hey, that's annoying, isn't it? It's not on purpose but I'll check my settings and see if I can change it. I am NOT liking Blogger Beta at all so far.

At February 01, 2007 12:33 a.m., Blogger christina said...

Wait - you can link to some, but not all comment posters. How strange.

Sounds like you had a fun time at IKEA. About five years ago, I went to an IKEA a couple times; but I dislike going through all the traffic to get there.

The monkeys and finger puppets are cool.

It must be Blogger Beta. I'll update my link even though it's the same and see what happens, because I'm still getting that error message.

The pie was GOOD. :)

Tim - Yes, it always seems that IKEA is miles away from where anyone lives, but this new one is only a 15 minute drive, thank goodness.

rositta - Wow, I guess you have some good shopping fights. It looks like some links in the comments work while others don't. Maybe Blogger will figure it out some time.

Eurotrippen - Aww, we still love you even if you hate IKEA. ;-)

Lisa - I had the same thing this morning. It seems to be a known Blogger error and everyone is having trouble today. Some say it helps if you clear your cache, delete your cookies and refresh a couple of time. Apparently the people who "work" at Blogger are on it, but I wouldn't expect much. The Blogger Help discussion group is going nuts today with reported problems.

I had problems making changes in the template today, I got error message, bx..., I did email blogger and surprise, half hour late I got an email back and the problem was fixed. Go figure.. Hubby doesn't like IKEA but he does take me, we don't fight over it but I know he doesn't like it. I feel the same about Home Depot by the way...ciao

My hand is raised, but I am going on Monday. So that's almost the same. My husband is at this instant putting up some IKEA spotlights in the kitchen, I suppose I should go help.

How funny. I was at my local Ikea that same day.

rositta - I'm glad they actually wrote back to you! I actually like going to Home Depot, if you can believe it. Reminds me of hanging out in hardware stores with my dad when I was a kid.

meredith - It's the Early Spring IKEA run. Everyone has to go at least once. I wonder if we both have the same spotlights.

J - See? It's catching. But you just went for the cookies, right? :-)
