the stockings were hung by the chimney with care...

...in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

Well, it's Nikolaustag - St. Nicholas Day, and just like every year, he arrived right on schedule with lots of treats for everyone.

When I saw this little figure, I had to get it for Mr. M because he and St. Nick bear a striking resemblance to each other. Well, maybe not the red suit, but the rest of it for sure.

I feel so lucky - how many women have a husband who looks like a 4th century bishop?

So does all this gift-giving mean that Christmas is over? Not by a long shot! This was just the preliminary round. Der Weihnachtsmann - same red suit, different guy, appears on Dec. 24 bearing yet more presents.

If you're confused by all this Christmas madness, you can go back and read last year's Nikolaus posts for some information on the different personalities that make up a German Christmas. It's all very complicated.

So Happy St. Nicholas Day! If you need me, I'll be in the living room eating all the chocolate I can get my hands on.

Just don't light the stove, otherwise you'll need a spoon for the chocolate :)

Happy Nikolaustag!

Happy St. Nicholas Day to you!
You're right: German Christmas customs can be rather confusing with all this Nikolaus-Knecht Ruprecht-Weihnachtsmann-Christkind stuff. But chocolate is fine anyway...

canswiss - It's an electric one so the heat wasn't on, thank goodness. Although I wouldn't be above scraping the chocolate off with a spoon in an emergency! :-)

Stefan - Thanks! I really like all the German traditions. We just mix everything up and have Canadian Santa Claus bring presents on the 25th too.

Maribeth - Thank you! The choclate is the best part.

mar - So you guys make the most of the holidays, I see. :-)

Betsy - Instant chocolate fondue! Nikolaus brought me something gold and shiny so I'm happy.

Can you please ask Mr. M to pose holding a giant candy cane so I can compare them properly?

The eating frenzy has begun again ... As much as I love all he great German goodies that come along with Christmas, I can already feel myself gaining weight - as I write this I've probably put on a pound!

Ho Ho Ho!

Dixie - We did, but I managed to restrain myself in the sugar department.

Ginnie - The fun just never stops here!

Betty - I'll have to disappoint you - Mr M had a "no photo" policy. He thinks the internet is evil.

Berlinbound - I've been surprisingly good so far and have actually lost weight this season. But there are still a few weeks of gluttony to go. :-)

Karen - Thanks! :-)

I am waiting however with baited breath for the picture of the particularly obnoxious inflatable Santa.
