did you call your dad yet?

Today is Father's Day in many parts of the world, including where I come from. I just called my dad to tell him that I love him, but he wasn't home. Probably being treated to a Father's Day brunch by my brothers. I guess I'll try again later.

Wilhelm Busch, German caricaturist and poet has a saying that goes like this:

"Vater werden ist nicht schwer, Vater sein dagegen sehr."

A loose translation (and one of the better ones I've seen) would be

"Becoming a father is easy enough, but being one can be very rough."

Hats off to all you fathers out there who have taken on the challenge...

I'm not a father; but your quote sounds probably too real at times. But one must not forget the blessings that come with having children and being a parent.

Tim - Absolutely. Having children truly is a blessing, but not all people who have them realize it.

Yup, I called mine about 11am here. They were driving and on their way back from their cabin in the snow.

(by the way, I'd love to meet up when you are in Van for a visit.)

Expat - Nice that you got hold of your dad. I'd love to meet up with you too. I'll e mail you soon and we can arrange something.

Thanks for reminding us about father's day (though this year I remembered because Mom reminded me last week). :-)

You bet I called him: right when we got home from Holland. I was lucky to catch him on his mobile phone, though. BTW, I love Willy Bush :-)

Nice quote... I'll have to remember it. I remember another one from a film, can't quite put my finger on where it's from though, "Any fool can have a child, but it takes a real man to be a father."

Awww. I did think of my dad. Thoughts count when you can't call, you know! BTW, I've seen Wilhelm Busch's caricatures at the Herrenhauser museum in Hannover. It was nice to know who you were talking about! I definitely like his quote as well as the one quoted above by gc philo.

Karen - I sometimes (almost) forget too because of Father's Day being on a different day in Germany.

CanSwiss - I'm sure he appreciated your call.

gc philo - I have a feeling that your movie quote may be another translation for the Busch one. I like both of them a lot.

Ginnie - Oh yes, thoughts *definitely* count. There are many ways to "call" ones dad, I think. Busch's caricatures are quite amazing, aren't they?
