spoiled rotten

In Germany it's customary to make (or buy) your own birthday cake(s) and be ready to entertain any and all guests who may drop by, even if they don't call first. But since I'm not German, I can do what I want, right?

Last year I did actually make my own cake, while my loved ones slaved over a hot stove all day.

This year I just wasn't in the mood, so we went out and bought a couple of cakes. Germany gets points for having really high quality frozen cakes that taste like they came right from the bakery after you thaw them. We chose a chocolate layer cake and a German cheesecake. Yum.

I did make dinner, though, and we tried a side dish that was new to us: black squid ink linguine in a garlic and olive oil sauce accompanied by herbed chicken breasts and stir-fried broccoli. The black pasta was delicious and I'll be making it again soon.

The boys made me sweet cards and gave me a gift certificate for a tea pot I'd been wanting for a while but wasn't yet available.

And what about the great present from Mr. M? No, it wasn't a diamond tiara or tickets for a Caribbean cruise. If you run your mouse over the picture, you can see what was inside the bag.

I know, I know, everyone who is anyone already has an iPod and I'm probably the last one to join in on the craze, but this marks a big step forward in Mr. M's gift giving strategies. He's not one to go out and buy me jewelry or fancy underthings and in the past I've sometimes received "useful" gifts, you know, like household appliances or garden utensils. But this time he really thought about what I might like and chose just the right thing and that made me very happy. Now I just have to go and find 1,000 songs to upload and I'll be set for life.

This year getting older didn't hurt a bit.

Sounds great! Unfortunately, when I moused over the pic I couldn't see the gift (probably my puter's fault), but I was glad to read what you received and that it was what you wanted.

Are there any tunes in particular that I might have that I can bring you next weekend?

What a lovely birthday you had; and how on earth did you manage that trick with running the mouse over that gift?! Too cool. Kudos to M. for getting you such a great gift. Happy Birthday again.

What a YUMMY-looking chocolate layer cake and a German cheesecake!
And, black squid ink linguine?! Wooooow! I love it, too.
When you eat it, of course, you smile with BLACK TEETH, aren't you? ;) (Whenever I eat black pasta with my friends, we grin of embarrassment. :D)

“I Pod” that you were presented from Mr.M is great, OF COURSE♪ Mr. M who chose it to be a present for you is so cool!
But, the CARDS to which you were sent by your “SWEET BOYS” are as WONDERFUL as “i Pod”. You are very happy♪
Happy birthday again. Have a nice weekend!

Thanks everyone!

J - I don't think it works on all computers and it won't work unless the page is fully loaded. As for the tunes - well, anything but Robbie. :-)

euro-trac, cathy, ms mac - details on the "trick" can be found here

CanadianSwiss - I didn't even have a cell phone until a couple of years ago.

Nori - yes, the pasta was SO black. I really enjoyed it.

Yay! An iPod! Bixente the iPod is a Nano too. You'll have to think of a name for your iPod...all cool ones have a name! :)

Your dinner looks usual!

Don't you just love Coppenrath and Wiese cakes?

ipod! Good gift! Weren't you discussing last weekend about how you don't have one? Now I am the last person on the planent without one. Where did you get the pasta? Looks interesting.

Dixie - Yep, still trying to think up a name. The guys from Coppenrath und Wiese are my new boyfriends. No matter how rough life gets, there's always cake :-)

lilian - thanks! My mum gave me the ceramic flower ring years ago and it's wonderful for showing off smaller flowers.

Claire - Yeah, on the train I used Mr. M's cheap one and really liked it. He had actually bought mine the week before though. ESP! We got the pasta at Lidl during Italian Week. It doesn't taste fishy at all, just a bit different than normal pasta.

Wonderful present! (I must say I loved the way you presented it too, haven't seen it until now) I don't have an iPod (my son does, he also had a digital cam before I even thought about it) but I am afraid I am the type who cannot remain silent while listening to a song I like, I start singing immediately and that would be embarrassing in public... I always sing along while driving and listening to the radio...Happy day!

You had a fabulous birthday, I see, which you deserved. I love that you have an iPod (since Donica doesn't leave home without hers) and think Mr. M did good by you :) And don't you just love that mouse-over trick? Good time to use it! :)
