he'll always be my tiny sweetheart
Thirteen years ago today our first son was born. He was supposed to have been an April baby, but he wasn't having any of that and decided to surprise us by arriving 5 weeks early. 34 weeks and 5 days into the pregnancy, actually, according to those in the know.
It was an easy labour and birth, as far as those things go, despite the hospital's policy of not giving any pain medication. Did it hurt? You bet. Did that stop me from doing it again? Obviously not, since we had a repeat performance with his little brother 3 years later. Post natal amnesia is a wonderful thing.
So there was our little guy, premature but at 6 1/2 pounds a pretty decent weight. Because he arrived before his due date, however, they wanted to check him out and kept him in the children's hospital for two weeks before they finally let us bring him home.

my sweetie at 1 week old and me, 29 (but feeling 89)
It was at that time that I started to call him my 'tiny sweetheart' and the name has stuck to this day.
He grew from a wee infant into a roly-poly smiling baby.

As a toddler he used to crack us up with the funny things he did. Here's one of my favourite pictures of him taken in Vancouver.

Can I have some quiet, please? I need to make an important call.
And now he's a teenager. Where does the time go? We're having a family party on the weekend (it's Mr M's birthday on Saturday! And Boy9's the following Saturday! I know! What in the world was I thinking?) and he's having his friends over on Sunday to hang out.
Happy 13th Birthday my tiny sweetheart!

Barely able to crack a smile at 6:30 a.m. this morning.
Before I forget, today is not only the big guy's birthday, it's also Pancake Tuesday! When I was growing up, my mother always made us pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Traditionally, eggs, milk and fat were supposed to be used up before Lent, and what better way than to make pancakes.
So you know what we'll be having for dinner tonight. Along with lots and lots of bacon. Just because.
P.S. - It's Sparky's birthday too!! Go over to Jen's and congratulate him for making it to 32.

Happiest of Birthdays to Tiny Sweetheart! My goodness, if that's dad in one of the pics..he's a spitting image!
You are truly blessed Mausi!
Ah how cute!! And wow how big. My mom used to say my little one is all grown up now. You are making me feel older and older though since you have a 13 year old and we haven't even started having kids yet! Oh well - we are taking things later in life. :) But the phone booth photo is so adorable!
Schatzi darlin' - That's not Dad, it's me!! :-) (I've changed the caption now to prevent further confusion)
Expat - Yeah, he's huge - way taller than me now. Maybe someday soon you'll have a little one of your own to brag about. :-)
Post-natal amnesia? I'm still waiting for that one, three months later... Maybe I'll just have my Mister whack me upside the head with a frying pan.
OMG! Happy Birthday Boy13!!! Geez, your family's a whole load of Piscean! What are you?
And another: OMG! Mr. M's birthday is one day after mine!!! *winks*
mrs. johnson - Well, you forget about the pain, the other stuff lingers with you for a while. :-)
Elemm - Yeah, Pisceans everywhere you look. It's terrifying. But I'm a Gemini, thank goodness. And don't worry, we won't forget YOUR birthday. :-)
Happy Birthday Boy13!
My, he actually looks a little like my Boy12! And, my Boy12 arrived 4 weeks early and weighed in at 7lb 1/2Oz! He had underdeveloped lungs and was in the NICU for a couple of days. Compared to the other babies in there he was HUGE! Can you imagine how big our boys would have been had they gone full term?
ms mac - I know! They said he could have been over 9 pounds if he'd been full term. And his little brother arrived a week late and DID weigh just over 9. That was fun. :-o
It was the lungs with this little guy too. Once they got that taken care of he was fine.
Happy Birthday Boy13! Adorable pictures. :D Man, time flies. I dunno. I love the babies but I can't complain about slowly enjoying every other stage of their lives either. Well, that's not exactly true. I could enjoy it a little *more* slowly. I wish they didn't grow up so fast!
An aside: I sighed the whole time reading these comments and felt so OLD. I have an 18 year old daughter, which practically qualifies me as a geriatric. My babies were, respectively, 9 pounds 14 oz., 11 pounds 6 oz., and my last, a preemie who came two weeks early, 9 pounds 5 oz. I've seen 6 and 8 pound babies from far away but they look so breakable I'm afraid to touch them.
I remember a funny sight. Since my youngest was premature and inhaled a bit of fluid during the birth he spent a couple days in an incubator. Rather, lopping over the sides in one. It looked like someone tried to stuff a little pink elephant in a too-small clear plastic box.
So happy birthday to your son. Don't you find with each birthday of your child, you realise how times jst flies by ....
Happy B-Day, Boy13!
Well, I can't talk babies, but it looks like you're going to have yourself a couples of parties there in the coming days/weeks!
Happy bday to your tiny sweetheart! He will be your tiny one even when he turns 43! the picture of the smiling baby is adorable! It sounds like a fun weekend ahead of you!
Beautiful Christina ... I can just imagine what it must feel like to have your first-born son reach his teens ... just imagine mind you ... I'm in no rush here ... and enjoying almost every moment of HH's toddlerhood.
Happy Birthday all around ...
happy birthday to him. does he know you have out those pictures online? so cute but i definitely wouldn't want my baby pics online :)
Time flies..before we know it our boys will be all grown up and gone...lousy thought, huh. Wish we could hold onto these years and make time stand still.
Oh happy birthday, Boy13. Or maybe we should start calling you YoungMan13! I hope it's been a great day for you and that you new life year brings you everything you wish for yourself.
Hey...we had pancakes tonight too and for the exact same reason!
That's one cute babe! And your son's pretty cute too! ;) 29? You don't look a day over 18 in that picture!!
Best wishes to your great big tiny sweetheart! It does seem as if the birthdays fly by faster every year. Possibly because I'm getting senile...I don't remember DD's 13th birthday, let alone labor pain...

Happy Birthdays all around! A teenager in the house! Hopefully he'll keep letting you call him his tiny sweetheart.
How can you keep up with so many birthdays at the same time?! I have a hard time with one a time!
By the way, you look crazy young in the picture where you are holding him! I thought you weren't a day over 19!
Happy Bday, Boy13!
Christina, Boy9 was over 9 lbs? Wouldn't that be like passing a Volkswagen?
Also, let Boy13 know that he's not the only one that can't crack a smile at 6:30. I have trouble doing it before 11:30!
Christina;
This post made me teary!
I can relate and my oldest is only just about to turn 5. You look so young in that photo (and I completely know what you mean about feeling 89!:)
Your son is beautiful. What a lovely family you have. I hope you all had a great day.
xoxo
lovely post. I get all emotional at birthdays. Giving birth is an incredible experiance and watching our little ones grow is indescribable
ahhh what a wonderful post for a big tiny sweetheart. Happy birthday big little boy!!
Had I known your son's birthday was only 4 days after my son's, we could have had their parties together! LOL Does this mean that Boy12 is now Boy13? I hope he had a very happy birthday even if you did wake him up at 6:30am! hehe
Such sweet pictures! Happy (belated) Birthday to Boy13!
Btw, if you need help on those socks, let me know. They aren't really difficult.
My oldest daughter just turned 13. Hard to believe how quickly they grow. I love her dearly even though she jokes constantly about making me go gray now that she's a teenager. Oy!
So the day has come and now your household will never be the same. Those teenage years raise everyone to a new level, or so it seems! Congratulations!
And I loved hearing about the Pancake tradition for Fat Tuesday. Got my education on that one, thanks to you. Sounds like a fun tradition.
Happy birthay to the not-so-tiny-anymore-sweetheart!
Thanks to those pictures, I also know how you managed to keep looking so young - you're simply caught in a time-shift. Holding your baby at age 29, you look like a teenage mom :).
Happy birthday to all of you.
Hope it was a nice family celebration?
- Sparky
I love this post!! That's all I can say. Just loved it.
My oldest is 19. It seems like just yesterday he was riding on my shoulders.
Hope he enjoyed his birthday.
Happy Bday to Boy12! Guess he's Boy 13, now eh? :-)
Buon compleanno to your son! I am a little late, but I just read your post. Hope he had a wonderful day!
Cyn
